Originally built as a British garrison at the start of the 100 year war, later converted into a more luxurious castle and owned by a local family for a brisk 550 years. The piano nobile in French chateaus is often accessed by an external stair. Here the landscape does the job, rising up around the principal facade to provide direct access for valued guests. The serfs get to enter around the back.
